Cherie Hearts Kidz Campus @ Pasir Ris Elias Mall - Project : “The Community Nursery @ CIN Preschool Programme” on 26 April 2021

The Community Nursery @ CIN Preschools programme is designed to educate preschoolers about the native tree species found on our sunny island, the characteristics of different tree species (flowers, plants, biodiversity-attracting, etc.), how trees grow as well as the importance of nature and greenery in the ecosystem. This project aims to instill nature stewardship in the younger generations, allowing them to learn more about nature. This project also serves as a platform for the younger generation to be a part of the One Million Trees (OMT) movement, in which a million trees will be planted across Singapore over the next 10 years in partnership with the community. These greening efforts will ensure that Singapore continues to be a highly liveable city, in the face of future challenges like increased urbanisation and climate change, as we move towards becoming a City in Nature.

The Community Nursery provided us the necessary provisions (seeds, approved soil mixture, pots) to plant native tree species in our schools. K1 and K2 children are involved in planting process, as well as maintenance (watering, etc.) and observations of the saplings (Eg: emergence of new leaf, visits by butterflies, birds, etc.). Once the sapling has reached a suitable height, it will be transferred to a community nursery for further growing and eventually planted.

“We are going to plant “Dodonaea Viscosa” and “Sophora Tomentosa”.”

“These are the items we need for planting.”

“We fill over half the pot with potting soil and then spread the seeds evenly on top of the potting soil, after that, we sprinkle a thin layer of potting soil to cover the seeds.”

“After that, we need to water the seeds until water can be seen flowing out of the base of the pot.”

“We take turn to take care of our plants, and recording their growth.”
