Building Bridges, Closing the Gap: Connecting with our Ah Gong’s and Ah Mah’s Amidst the Pandemic cum SSDB Finale

Staff from Comnet Senior Activity Centre warmly received the “Thank You” poster made by the children for the successful collaboration with the centre.

Our Ah Gong’s and Ah Mah’s, the country’s pioneer generation worked hard through difficult times so that the generation today could have a better life. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, activities that involve social interactions vital in maintaining their mental and physical wellbeing were postponed.

In their efforts to promote genuine social interaction with the seniors despite the COVID19 situation, the children have prepared a number of activities for them. Our SSDB Finale which we implemented last 5th-8th October was aimed to make their day special and worth remembering.

The seniors were actively engaged in the online workout session with the K1 children.

The children showed their lively steps to the seniors via zoom.

The K1 children conducted an online workout session with the seniors through the NDP song “Everything I am.” They chose this song as it promotes community spirit and gratitude in the face of challenges. The seniors were very delighted to see the children on screen. The children in turn were excited to see the seniors follow the steps that they did.

The seniors involved themselves in a painting session after their workout.

The N2 children also engaged the seniors through collaborative art. This effort was in partnership with their Practitioner Inquiry project which deems to increase the children’s interest in arts. The seniors painted their canvasses blue and printed circles using toilet paper roll. Their works were given to the children to complete and add elements using their own imagination and creativity to go with the theme “In the Sea.” They used collage technique to finish their product. The elderly mused at the presented artpieces with pleasure.

The N2 children devoted their time to decorate the craft for the elders.

The young artists proudly showed their completed work, each with a designated title: Sailing Boats, Wandering Turtle and Rainbow Fish.

The children’s very own grandparents were also part of this culminating activity. This year, ‘Families for Life Council’ provided postcards for the children to observe the “Celebrating Our Grands” campaign. The children decorated the postcards and wrote heartfelt messages for their grandparents.

The children presented the postcards to their grandparents after decorating them.

The week-long event concluded through a recap of what the children have learnt and embarked on in the whole project. They also used the KDSG resources from Kindsville to reinforce their understanding about Kindness.

The children discussed ways on how to use the 5 magic words in different situations. They also completed the kindness puzzles and explained how each scenario shows kindness.

Everyone raised their arms wide to mark the Finale of their SSDB 2020 Project “Footprints of Kindness in People’s Hearts.”
