A Caring and Inclusive Home for All

It is finally time for the children to create their care packages for the foreign workers. The K1 and K2 children first started by making their DIY hand sanitizers. 4 simple steps are what we need.

First, we started off by pouring the rubbing alcohol.

Secondly, we added in the aloe vera gel.

Next, we added in lavender essential oil to make it smell nice.

Then, we mixed them all together.

Lastly, we poured them into the spray bottles.

Ta-da! Here is our finished product!

The children are testing out the hand sanitizer that they have made.

To add the finishing touch, we had designed a packaging for the hand sanitizer and this is what the completed hand sanitizer looks like.

The next item in our care package is dried food. Initially, we had wanted to put in a fruit into the care package, however, we had changed our plan of giving out dried food instead as fruits would get spoilt easily.

We had involved parents from all levels (Toddler class to Kindergarten 2 class) and we encouraged them to bring in 1 to 2 items of dried food to be given out.

Look at all the dried food the parents have donated!

The last thing to be included in the care package is the Thank You card. The card is designed to show appreciation for to the foreign workers (cleaners around our centre’s area) for keeping our community clean.

After everything is completed, it was time to pack the care packages. We had packed a total of 50 care packages to be given out to the foreign workers around the community.

Care packages packed and ready to be given out!

Before giving out the care packages, we had shown the children the care packages. We also had a discussion about who we are giving the care packages to and why we are giving out the care packages to the foreign workers.

The children had shared that “We are giving the care package to the cleaners as they help us to sweep the floors.” and “We give them food because they help us to sweep the floor.” They had also shared that “We make hand sanitizers for them as they need to clean their hands after sweeping.

In light of the COVID-19 situation, the teachers had represented the children in presenting the care packages to the foreign workers.Other than giving out to the foreign workers, we had also planned to give out to the people living around the community especially the elderly.

To show our care for the elderly, the teachers had created a hamper for them and it was given to the elderly at the daycare that is near our school.

As we wrap up our SSDB project for this year, the children had learnt about the importance of caring for themselves and also caring for the people around them. The values of care and inclusiveness have also been imparted to them through this project and also during this pandemic.

To end off, a quote to sum up the project is “Everyone of us needs to show how much we care for each other and, in the process, care for ourselves.”
